Delta State Incident: Mother Arrested for Killing One-Year-Old Son

A 24-year-old woman named Sofia Nkwo has been paraded by the Delta State Police Command for the death of her one-year-old son.

Sofia confessed to the crime, explaining that she took the drastic step because she felt unable to care for her child any longer after the father rejected him.

During the same parade, the police also presented suspects involved in the production of counterfeit alcohol, murder, kidnapping, and car theft, among other crimes.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, expressed his dismay at the woman’s actions while addressing the gathered suspects at the police headquarters in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Recounting the incident, CP Olufemi stated, “On April 28, 2024, a case of infanticide was reported at Oleh Division where Sofia Nkwor, a 24-year-old from Isoko south LGA, was accused of dumping her one-year and four-month-old child in a well along the road in Araya community, Isoko South LGA.”

He continued, “The abandoned child was discovered floating in the well by children playing around the area. Sofia Nkwor was apprehended, and she admitted to dumping the child on April 26, 2024.”

Regarding the recent incidents of kidnappings and killings in Ika North-East and Ika South areas, particularly targeting farmers by armed assailants, CP Olufemi assured the public that measures have been taken.

He stated, “We are cognizant of the security challenges in the Ika region and have deployed personnel, instructing the Area Commander to intensify efforts in the area to secure the bushes.”

CP Olufemi added, “Collaboration with the Edo State Command is ongoing, given the proximity of the affected area to the boundary between Delta and Edo.”
