The United States Government has lifted the sanctions imposed against the president in charge of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguezin the midst of rapprochement with the new authorities of the Latin American country after the capture, last January, of the president, Nicolás Maduro.

The Treasury Department announced this Wednesday on its website that it excludes “Delcy Eloísa Rodríguez Gómez” from the list of “specially designated nationals” of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), without giving more details.

The president highlighted Washington’s decision “as a step in the direction of normalization and strengthening relations between our countries” in a message spread on social networks shortly after the announcement.

“We trust that this progress will allow the lifting of the sanctions in force on our country, allowing us to build and guarantee an effective binational cooperation agenda for the benefit of our people. Let us continue to advance in the construction of a prosperous Venezuela for all!” he added.

New context in bilateral relations

The measure comes in a new stage of relations between the United States and Venezuela after Washington’s attack on Caracas in early January and years after the Latin American country sanctioned Rodríguez in September 2018, during Donald Trump’s first term.
