Trump removes US Attorney General Pam Bondi

The change in the Department of Justice comes at a time of maximum political demand for the Trump Administration. Bondi, one of the president’s most faithful allies, leaves office after a year marked by pressure to fulfill electoral campaign promises of criminal prosecution and the handling of politically sensitive cases such as the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Who was Pam Bondi in the Government

Pam Bondi, former Florida attorney general and long-time Trump ally, took over the leadership of the Department of Justice in 2025. Her appointment responded to her judicial experience and political loyalty, which made her one of the key figures of the Executive in matters of security and criminal prosecution.

During his year at the helm of the department, he oversaw an offensive against crime that Trump called “massive,” although he also faced criticism from the president for his handling of sensitive cases and for what he considered a lack of aggressiveness against his political adversaries.

Trump’s message in Truth Social

Trump announced the dismissal in a message on Truth Social where he mixed praise with the announcement of the dismissal:

“Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General for the past year. Pam did a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown on crime across our country, with murders falling to their lowest level since 1900. We love Pam very much, and she will move on to a much-needed important new role in the private sector, to be announced at a later date. Our Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanche, a very talented legal mind and respected, will assume the position of acting attorney general,” he commented.

Tensions prior to dismissal

The decision comes after media outlets such as Reuters and The New York Times reported Trump’s frustration with Bondi, especially over the handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s files and an alleged lack of forcefulness in pursuing his political enemies. White House sources had confirmed that the president had considered dismissal and even raised Lee Zeldin as a possible replacement.

Finally, Trump opted for Todd Blanche, described by the president himself as “a very talented and respected legal mind”, which reinforces continuity in the Government’s legal team.

The presidential message presents Bondi’s departure as an orderly transition to “a new and important position in the private sector”, avoiding explicitly describing it as a dismissal. However, the political context and previous information make it clear that this is a forced replacement due to the president’s demands on the management of the Department of Justice.
