The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited expects Kaduna refinery to operate at 60% capacity by December

By the end of 2024, the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company, KRPC, is set to have its rehabilitation completed, as stated by the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL.

During a recent oversight visit to the refinery by members of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Petroleum Downstream, led by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Managing Director of KRPC, Mustafa Sugungun, revealed that the 110,000-barrel-per-day refinery is slated to commence production at a 60% capacity by the year-end, with full production to follow.

Sugungun mentioned that the ongoing rehabilitation work, currently at 40% completion, is on track and expected to meet the set timeline.

He commented, “Our rehabilitation is progressing well and in accordance with our plan. We aim to have this plant running at 60% nominal capacity by December 31st, 2024.

“We are currently at 40% of the rehabilitation phase. Our commitment is to revive the plant to a minimum of 60% nominal capacity,” he added.

Senator Ubah, emphasizing the importance of the collaboration between the President Buhari administration and the National Assembly, stated that the oversight visit is a step towards revitalizing all of the nation’s refineries, ending the reliance on imported petroleum products.

The Kaduna refinery, established in 1980 to cater to Nigeria’s Northern region’s petroleum needs, has a production capacity of 110,000 barrels per day. Over the years, similar to the refineries in Port Harcourt and Warri, it has been non-operational, leading to heavy dependence on imported fuel products.
