The indefinite strike by ASUU UniAbuja

Commencing an indefinite strike, the University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities aims to bring attention to issues concerning the union.

At the conclusion of its congress, held at the institution’s Permanent Site, the union announced its decision to go on strike.

UniAbuja ASUU members have been in conflict with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman regarding the procedures for selecting a new VC.

An advertisement appearing in a national daily on March 15, 2024, solicited applications for Na’Allah’s replacement.

However, ASUU members, during a conference, rejected the advertisement, deeming it “illegal” and clarifying that it did not originate from the governing council.

The Chairman of UniAbuja ASUU, Sylvanus Ugoh, pointed out that the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended; 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2) mandates only the governing council to advertise the VC position following a vacancy declaration.

Ugoh argued that no other entity or individual is legally authorized to initiate the process of appointing a succeeding VC.

“On Friday 15th March 2024, the university administration published a vacancy advertisement for the Vice-Chancellor post,” Ugoh mentioned.
