The latest balance of the tragic flood in the Nepalese municipality of Rasuwa now leaves a total of 750 dead (734 in Nepal and 16 in Tibet) and more than 3,000 missing, while the rains and landslides are complicating rescues and the Nepalese Government demands the “urgent” arrival of international aid.
New dangers of overflows threaten the region, after the Bhotekoshi River has overflowed again and following warnings from surveillance drones, which have detected a landslide on the mountainside, 2.8 kilometers downstream of the Purepuqiang Tsangp reservoir.
Yellow alert activated for rain
“Search, rescue and relief teams in the affected areas, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan and others, as well as those in the affected areas, are requested to take extreme precautions,” the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has warned.
In addition to the risk of flooding, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology of Nepal has declared a yellow alert (the lowest) for rain in the area affected by the flood, rainfall that is expected to continue at least until Monday and make rescue efforts even more difficult.
The Chinese state broadcaster, CCTV, has confirmed that “the landslide has created a new dam and a new artificial lake is being formed” that could burst the containment at any time, so rescue personnel near the buried Gyirong border post have been moved to safer areas.
China confirms that a Spaniard is still missing
In addition, two Y-20 transport planes from the Chinese Army Air Force have arrived in the country in recent hours, along with Chinese tunnel rescue experts. All of them with the objective of rescuing and finding the missing alive. According to the Nepalese National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, there are 2,498 people who are unaccounted for.
Regarding the missing Spanish citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared that it maintains two missing people after the catastrophe, while in the count released this Sunday by the Chinese state media CCTV, a Spanish citizen appears for the first time. The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) had previously reported that two Spaniards had been located of the three initially missing.
