The apprehension of 46 suspected cult members in Kwara by the police

It has been reported by the Kwara State Police Command that they have successfully apprehended 46 individuals suspected of being involved in cult activities that have been causing fear among the citizens in various parts of Ilorin, the state capital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, released a statement detailing the arrests made in response to reports of disturbances caused by these suspects in designated trouble spots within the metropolis over the weekend.

According to the statement, a tragic incident occurred on Saturday where suspected cult members were allegedly responsible for the death of Adelodun Farouq at Film House/Bolanta area in Ilorin West Local Government Area. Additionally, Abdullahi Alao, a motorcyclist, was reportedly assaulted and injured by these individuals on Sunday.

Furthermore, disorder broke out in different areas such as Baboko, Ile Onimago, and Adabata, resulting in arrests made by the police to curb the situation.

The statement mentioned, “In the early hours of April 13, 2024, a tragic incident of culpable homicide took place at Ile-Film/Bolanta road in Ilorin. Suspected cult members attacked and fatally shot Adelodun Farouq, a 36-year-old resident of Eleran Compound. The victim’s burial was carried out in accordance with Islamic rites without police knowledge. Initial investigations suggest the involvement of one Abubakar Gobir, a member of the Ayee confraternity, in the crime.

“Later that evening, around 2000hrs, reports emerged regarding further cult-related activities in Ile-Alawo Compound, Centre Igboro. Unidentified cultists allegedly assaulted Abdullahi Alao, a 35-year-old motorcycle rider, with a machete cut to his head. Alao was then taken to an undisclosed location by his younger brother, prompting detectives to conduct a comprehensive search of the area.

“On April 14, 2024, yet another incident of criminal collaboration involving suspected cultists was reported across different areas, including Baboko, Ile Onimago, Adabata, and Eruda. Miscreants engaged in a violent confrontation, engaging in combat with weapons like broken bottles and stones, culminating in the blockage of Baboko Road.

“Prompt action was taken by the DPO C Division, deploying six patrol teams, supported by community policing officers, to suppress the unrest.

“During the operation, a total of 46 suspects were apprehended and handed over to the State Command Anti-Cultist Unit for further investigation. Out of the 46, 14 suspects have been connected to the recent cult activities in Ilorin metropolis.”

Ejire-Adeyemi mentioned that peace has been restored in the afflicted areas, road obstructions cleared, and residents can go about their daily routines without hindrance.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya, advises the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious incidents promptly to the authorities,” the statement concluded.
