Supreme Court Delays Ruling on Zamfara Election

An appeal lodged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking a review of the Supreme Court’s judgement on the Zamfara election has had its judgement reserved by the court.

Representing the ex-Governor Abdulazeez Yari’s faction of the APC, their counsel Robert Clarke (SAN) brought the application for review. This was in relation to the apex court’s consequential order that nullified the APC’s total votes in the election due to the party’s October 3, 2018 primary. In response, counsel to the Senator Kabiru Marafa-led faction of the APC, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the application and impose punitive costs.

Ozekhome argued that the Supreme Court’s decision is final and not subject to review. He supported his assertion by referencing recent cases in Bayelsa and Imo states, along with Section 235 and 285 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999.

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Mohammed, who led a five-man panel overseeing the case, stated that the judgment date will be communicated to all parties.
