Support for Jigawa flooding victims by UNICEF

Collaboration between the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is set to provide emergency assistance for victims of flooding in the state, according to UNICEF’s Emergency Manager, Christiana Valderrama, who made the announcement during a visit to SEMA.

Emphasizing the importance of comprehending risks, opportunities, and challenges associated with flooding, particularly those caused by the overflow of Tiga Dam, Valderrama stated that UNICEF will work alongside SEMA and other stakeholders involved in emergency responses to aid the flooding victims in the state.

She mentioned, “UNICEF’s plan is to assist the government through SEMA in delivering aid to flood victims. The funding, supported by the European Union’s humanitarian aid, will involve cash transfers to 5,000 families in the state.

“We conducted a workshop involving all stakeholders in November, and our goal is to see the finalization of the state flood contingency plan.

“This will promote a collective understanding and identification of individuals at risk of flood impact.”

Expressing appreciation for UNICEF’s support, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, assured the accurate and transparent distribution of the cash transfer allocated for flood victims.

Mairiga acknowledged that the yearly floods in the state have led to loss of lives, as well as substantial destruction of farmlands and properties valued in billions of Naira.

He also advised residents living along the riverbanks to consider relocating to prevent future incidents.
