Simi’s Perspective on the Dynamics of Female Relationships in the Music Industry

Exploring the challenges faced by women in the music industry, Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, professionally known as Simi, delves into the issue of female artists not always having the most harmonious of relationships. This, she asserts, is often due to being continuously compared and pit against each other.

During a recent conversation with Angela Yee, the talented artist behind ‘Men Are Crazy’ acknowledged that the constant competition instigated by fans can strain the connections between women in the industry. The pressures that arise from these comparisons can be both intense and distracting, particularly considering the relatively lower number of female artists as compared to their male counterparts.

Simi articulated, “The music industry frequently sees fans setting women against each other. The atmosphere created is quite overwhelming at times, with new female artists instantly subjected to comparisons with us veterans.”

“We are all capable of thriving independently. My support for women is evident in my work and my words. However, the assumption that the legitimacy of my advocacy for women hinges solely on collaborating with them is perplexing. Women contribute significantly to diverse spheres of life.”

“The tendency to pit us against one another adds unnecessary strain to potential relationships that could have otherwise flourished naturally,” she added.
