Reflections on Experience: Aubameyang’s Time at Chelsea

A recount of his time at the club, former Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shares insights on his season-long journey at Stamford Bridge.

In the summer of 2022, Aubameyang made the move to Chelsea from Barcelona, marking the start of a challenging season for him.

Having recently departed Arsenal for Barcelona, the Gabonese striker later transitioned to Olympique Marseille from Stamford Bridge.

His transfer to Chelsea was influenced by the recommendation of former manager Thomas Tuchel, who eventually parted ways with the club during that season.

Struggling to leave a mark on the pitch, Aubameyang’s participation in the UEFA Champions League squad was cut short.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Aubameyang openly discussed the unfolding of his time at Stamford Bridge.

“By December, I realized that my season was essentially over. The desire to leave had already crept in, though regulations limited my options due to club transfers,” he expressed.

Contemplating on the challenges faced, he shared, “I questioned myself: Does this define aging? I concluded that it’s a personal choice. You can either succumb to such notions or challenge them by affirming that you have more to offer.”

“Frustration and weariness crept in, leading me to a state of disillusionment. It was a moment where I felt somewhat adrift, a phase of self-reflection,” he added.
