Portugal will once again have a socialist president after two decades: Antonio José Seguro defeats the far-right André Ventura

The former socialist minister, Antonio José Seguro, prevailed this Sunday in the second round of the Portuguese elections, against the leader of the extreme right André Ventura.

It has achieved 66% of the support

Antonio José Seguro has achieved 66% of the support compared to Ventura, who achieved 33.18%, and this Monday he will be received by the outgoing president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to prepare the change. Surely it says that the winners of these elections are the Portuguese.

“I accept with great humility, enormous emotion and the trust that the Portuguese have just entrusted to me to be president of the republic, the president of all, all, all the Portuguese,” said the socialist.

Work “for a more developed and fairer Portugal”

Surely he sent a message to his opponent at the polls, Ventura, to from now on stop being adversaries and work “for a more developed and fairer Portugal.”

He also threw a few words at the center-right government of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, reminding him that during the campaign he promised “institutional loyalty” with the Executive and that he will keep his word, which does not mean that he will be a demanding president.

Regarding the duration of the current Executive’s term, which still has three and a half years ahead of it, Seguro indicated that it will not be because of him that it will be interrupted.

He will surely be sworn in as head of state of Portugal on March 9, the day Rebelo de Sousa’s term ends, after ten years in power.
