Politicians must spend time in prison to become better leaders – Senator Suswam

In a statement, Senator Gabriel Suswam, representing Benue East Senatorial district, expressed the belief that Nigerian politicians should experience imprisonment for one or two days as it would contribute to their development as leaders.

During a discussion on prison decongestion led by Senator Uche Ekwunife, Senator Suswam, who is facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged N3.1 billion fraud during his tenure as Governor of Benue State, emphasized the importance of understanding the challenges within correctional facilities.

Reflecting on his own time in prison, Senator Suswam shared that his experience led him to advocate for political leaders to spend time in prison to gain insights into the issues faced by inmates.

He asserted, “I want to support this motion based on my experience. When I left prison, I recommended that for people to be proper leaders in this country, at least each and everyone of us must spend one or two days in prison.”

Senator Lawan interjected with a humorous remark, to which Senator Suswam continued by describing his observations and actions during his time in prison.

Following the discussion, the Senate endorsed the motion for prison decongestion and instructed relevant committees to conduct thorough oversight of correctional centers in Nigeria.
