Police Officer in Taraba Killed by Vigilante Group in Ambush

A tragic incident unfolded in Taraba State as an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, was fatally shot and killed by a vigilante group.

Reports indicate that the police officer, identified by his force number as AP/NO191462, lost his life in an ambush at Sandirde village in Gassol local government council of the state.

Police Commissioner David Iloyanomon, in a statement released to the press in Jalingo, the state capital, disclosed that the ambush was orchestrated by the vigilante group’s leader, Ali Dissol.

Detailing the event, he stated, “On 4/5/2024, a team of special strike force operatives attached to Government House Taraba State, led by SP Jamu Emmanuel, fell into an ambush at Sandirde village in Gassol local government council orchestrated by a local vigilante group.”

The vigilante members opened fire, striking the officer, ultimately leading to his passing in a local village hospital.

Expressing his strong condemnation, he added, “The reprehensible and unjust killing of the officer was an unprovoked criminal act. The command has mobilized intelligence and operational assets to pursue the fleeing attackers and ensure the perpetrators of this heinous act are held accountable.”

Offering sympathies to the deceased officer’s family and colleagues, he emphasized the commitment to combating criminal activities in the region.

Notably, this incident follows closely after the brutal murder of a local monarch in Gassol council by a suspected vigilante group.
