Paul Merson Criticizes Real Madrid’s Progress in the UCL as Pure Luck

Real Madrid’s victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie through a penalty shootout has sparked criticism from Arsenal legend Paul Merson.

Merson expressed his disappointment, stating that Pep Guardiola’s team completely outshined Real Madrid and that the Spanish club’s advancement to the Champions League semi-finals was merely down to luck.

In a 4-3 penalty victory at the Etihad Stadium, Real Madrid managed to edge past City after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Despite City dominating possession and registering more shots on target than Madrid during the game, they failed to secure a win.

Merson shared his thoughts on Sky Sports, highlighting, “The game last night was a disgrace. Man City’s performance against Real Madrid was reminiscent of their game against Luton. The match was truly astonishing to watch, with Real Madrid advancing through sheer luck. City completely outplayed their opponents; it was an embarrassing defeat for Real Madrid.”

“It was one of the most lopsided matches I have ever witnessed, and City was simply unlucky to lose on penalties. Real Madrid cannot claim they are on par with City after that game. They have a lot of ground to cover to match City’s level.”
