Ohanaeze Ndigbo not affiliated with Easter retreat event

It has been highlighted that the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, is not connected to the upcoming Easter Retreat scheduled to take place in Asaba, Delta State.

Flyers have been circulating, inviting individuals to Asaba for an Igbo Easter Retreat from March 30 to April 2, 2024, a move which Ohanaeze has deemed as mischievous.

The National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Alex Ogbonnia, expressed that the organization initially considered ignoring the “Igbo Easter Retreat” as sheer rascality and insensitivity. However, in order to prevent any misinterpretation by the public, they found it necessary to issue a formal statement in rebuttal.

Ogbonnia’s statement emphasized the disdain Ohanaeze holds towards those who exploit its name for personal gains, highlighting the deep-rooted significance of Ohanaeze in Igbo culture.

The recent Igbo Retreat organized by Ohanaeze on March 27, 2024, was chaired by Admiral Allison Amaechina Madueke and witnessed the presence of notable figures such as current and former government officials and renowned scholars.

In response to the misleading Asaba flyer promoting the unauthorized Easter Retreat, Ohanaeze made it clear that such an event clashes with the traditional Easter celebrations observed by Igbo Christians and elders in their respective communities.

The statement also pointed out the misleading use of names of Igbo professors in the flyer, noting that genuine Ohanaeze members are well-known figures like Chief Engr. Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu as the President General and Ambassador Okey Emuchay as the Secretary General.

Concerns were raised about the potential disruption of peace and security by unscrupulous individuals behind the unauthorized event, with security agencies duly alerted to the situation, particularly in light of recent unrest in the region.

It was strongly advised that individuals steer clear of the unaffiliated Easter Retreat in Asaba to avoid unnecessary risks.
