Nigerian Student Association Demands Immediate End to Fuel Scarcity

Expressing strong disapproval, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has condemned the ongoing fuel scarcity affecting various regions of the country.
In a statement released by the Senate President, Comrade Akinteye Afeez, on Sunday, NANS emphasized the unacceptability of this situation given the current economic conditions in the country.

The student organization questioned the reasons behind the deterioration of fuel supply despite the oversight of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu at the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, responsible for guiding petroleum activities in Nigeria, and Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, who is presiding over the worst fuel crisis in recent history, the prolonged shortages and disruptions in fuel supply are unprecedented for Nigerian students. This scenario cannot be normalized,” said the statement.

Enumerating the grave repercussions of the fuel crisis – such as unreliable electricity supply, escalating prices, and disrupted essential services – NANS highlighted the daily struggles faced by Nigerian students and the general population. Urging immediate action by NNPCL to address the fuel crisis and restore stability in the nation, the statement called for enhanced transparency and accountability in communicating the status of fuel supply and distribution.

Additionally, NNPCL was urged to enhance infrastructure and logistics for efficient fuel distribution nationwide and promptly resolve any bottlenecks or inefficiencies in the supply chain. The statement emphasized the importance of engaging with various stakeholders, including student representatives, to comprehend the impact of the crisis and collaborate on effective solutions.

If prompt and decisive steps are not taken by Mele Kyari to resolve the fuel crisis, the statement demanded his resignation or removal from office. The statement stressed that Nigerian students cannot endure any longer under ineffective leadership and are prepared to mobilize mass action if NNPCL fails to address the crisis promptly.

“NNPCL must fulfill its obligation and prioritize the welfare of the Nigerian populace for a better future,” concluded the statement.
