Nigerian Government Ensures Customers Without 20 Hours of Electricity Won’t be Charged New Tariff

In an announcement made on Monday, the Nigerian Government stated that customers who do not receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily will be exempt from paying the new tariff.

During a one-day investigative hearing before the Senate Committee on Power, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing a new policy aimed at revitalizing the power sector, assuring that any discomfort caused by the policy change would be brief.

This statement comes in response to the recent outcry from electricity consumers following the tariff hike by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

Minister Adelabu further disclosed that the Federal Government is prepared to allocate N2.9 trillion to subsidize electricity costs this year if the current tariff structure remains unchanged.

He reiterated that the primary objective of the government’s new policy is to provide a lifeline to the struggling power sector.
