NDLEA Reports 50,901 Arrests and 9,034 Convictions in 38 Months

In the past three years, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), disclosed that a total of 50,901 individuals involved in drug offenses, including 46 kingpins, have been apprehended.

Marwa highlighted that during this timeframe, the agency effectively brought 9,034 of these offenders to justice and confiscated over 7,561 tonnes of illegal substances.

According to Marwa, these actions have strongly conveyed the message to drug cartels and their leaders that Nigeria will not tolerate their criminal behavior.

These statements were made by Marwa at an event in Lagos, where he spoke during the commissioning of a new operational facility donated to the NDLEA by the British government, as conveyed in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi.

Marwa expressed appreciation for the significant support that will enhance the capabilities of the anti-narcotics agency in combatting substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

He emphasized that this marks a pivotal achievement in the ongoing battle against the scourge of illicit drug trafficking and abuse. Marwa thanked the British Government for their steadfast commitment and invaluable contributions to the cause.

The NDLEA further acknowledged the UK’s consistent support in the joint efforts to combat transnational organized crime, particularly in the domain of illicit drug production and trafficking.

Marwa stated, “This building not only serves as a physical structure but also symbolizes the enduring partnership between our nations in the global campaign against drug trafficking. It represents years of cooperation, mutual trust, and shared determination to address one of the most critical threats to our societies.”

“The significance of this project cannot be overstated. It will function as a crucial center for data analysis and strategic planning in our fight against drug trafficking networks and their operators. Equipped with advanced facilities and technology, we are now better prepared than ever to confront this complex and ever-evolving challenge head-on.”

He added, “Beyond the physical structure, this building embodies the essence of collaboration and unity that defines our relationship with the British Government. It signifies what can be accomplished when nations unite with a common purpose and commitment to creating a safer world for everyone.”

“As an agency, NDLEA has undergone substantial transformation, with support from partners like the UK catalyzing this metamorphosis. Our operations have seen significant reforms, leading to remarkable achievements over the past three years.”

“During this period, the NDLEA has attained substantial milestones in its mission to combat drug trafficking and abuse. With 50,901 arrests, including the capture of 46 drug leaders, our agency has showcased its resolute dedication to bringing perpetrators of illicit drug activities to justice.”

“Moreover, the conviction of 9,034 offenders underscores our relentless pursuit of accountability and deterrence in the fight against drug-related crimes.”

“The seizure of 7,560,748.5 kilograms (7,561 tonnes) not only disrupts the illegal drug trade but also deals a significant blow to the criminal networks responsible for their distribution.”

“We have taken decisive measures against illicit drug cultivation through our eradication campaign targeting cannabis plantations, which resulted in the destruction of 1,057.33348 hectares of cannabis farms in the past three years.”

In acknowledging the British government officials who facilitated the project, particularly Mr. Dave Carter, Marwa called for reinforcing the partnership between Nigeria and the UK.

“As we embark on a new phase in our collaboration, let us reaffirm our shared commitment to intensifying the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. Let us continue to work together across borders to disrupt criminal networks, intercept illegal drugs, and prosecute those profiting from the illicit drug trade.”

Marwa identified that despite significant progress under his leadership, the battle against illicit drugs is far from over.

He urged, “Let us increase our efforts, with renewed energy and determination, to build a safer, more secure future for the next generations.”

During the ceremony, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, affirmed ongoing support for NDLEA and Nigeria.

He stated, “The UK government is pleased to have a longstanding relationship with the NDLEA, and I am particularly delighted to have participated in various activities, especially in the maritime sector. This facility enhances our capabilities to address criminal activities.”

“We are committed to supporting the NDLEA and the Nigerian government in combating this global industry that necessitates a worldwide response. We reiterate our support, cooperation, and pride in working alongside the dedicated members of the NDLEA.”

Recall that PUNCH Online reported in January 2024 that the Akwa Ibom State Command of the NDLEA secured 68 convictions in 2023.

The state NDLEA Commander, Mrs. Obot Bassey, disclosed that during the year, 195 suspects, comprising 159 males and 36 females, were apprehended, and drugs weighing 1,267.24kg valued at millions of naira were confiscated.
