NAFDAC Notifies Public About Unauthorized Imported Sugar From Brazil, India

The public is being alerted by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) regarding the illicit importation of unauthorized sugar produced in Brazil and India.

In a statement released by the management of the Agency on Wednesday, NAFDAC revealed that the sugar is not registered and lacks Vitamin A fortification. This poses a health risk to consumers, as the safety and quality of the products are not ensured.

As per the statement, the products are smuggled into the Nigerian border communities of Borno, Adamawa, Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun States, etc., via Cameroun (Douala), Niger, Chad & Benin Republic.

The statement also revealed that approximately 200 trucks containing the illicit sugar have been distributed across Nigerian markets in communities such as Mubi, Gamboru’gala, Saki, Keshi, Badagry, and Idi – Iroko. These products are being sold for N32,000 – N34,000 per bag.

NAFDAC urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and remain vigilant throughout the supply chain to prevent the importation, distribution, sale, and consumption of these unregistered regulated products.
