Macron condemns the violence in the streets of France after the Champions League final: "It is unacceptable"

The celebrations of PSG’s victory have turned into something else: a wave of violence in the streets that has left hundreds arrested, one dead and dozens of officers injured. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, spoke out this Sunday about what happened and admitted that he is fed up “with the scenes of violence”, which he describes as “unacceptable”.

What happened in Paris on Saturday and other French cities after the French team’s European triumph is not tolerable, “it is not football,” Macron said in statements when receiving the PSG players and coaching staff at the Elysée. At the same time, the president has thanked the work of the security forces deployed throughout the country and has also valued the work of the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, in what happened.

Second year of violence

Given that this is the second year that this type of altercation has occurred, the president wanted to send a message to the nation assuring that he will not tolerate scenes like this again, since what happened this Saturday also took place in 2025 when PSG won the European competition. At that time, the authorities counted two people dead throughout the country during the celebrations and at least 192 injured, of which 22 were police officers and firefighters, in addition to 559 detainees.

“What we see is that individuals come who are not Paris Saint-Germain fans. We have clearly seen them in Paris, but also in the provinces. They wear Paris Saint-Germain t-shirts, but they don’t even watch the game,” said the head of the Interior regarding the consequences.

The deceased person, as announced by the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, is a 24-year-old man whose motorcycle crashed head-on into some concrete blocks on an exit branch of the ring road, near Porte Maillot (northwest of Paris). In addition, another person, 17 years old, is in a coma after being stabbed during a fight in the XVI neighborhood, in the west of the city.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the young man, dazed, had two wounds in his eye and was bleeding profusely from his mouth. Those involved fled immediately in front of the neighbors.

A second person was also in very serious condition due to last night’s festivities, although his life was not in danger, after a driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a terrace in the central 10th district of Paris. In that same incident, another person was injured less seriously.
