The confessed murderer of Giulia Cecchettin, the 22-year-old girl who received 75 stab wounds at the hands of her ex-boyfriend in a femicide that shocked Italy a little over a year ago, he was sentenced this Tuesday to life imprisonment by the Court of Venice (north) after more than six hours of deliberation by the judges.

Cecchettin was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Filippo Turetta, on November 11, 2023, five days before his body was located after a long search that shook the country and after which he ended up confessing to the crime upon his return to Italy after being arrested in Germany.

Turetta, 23, listened without flinching, with her head lowered and her eyes closed, to the sentence, in which the court accepted the prosecutor’s request, including the aggravating circumstance of premeditation, although it did not recognize the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and harassment, also requested.

“We have all lost as a society. I am neither more relieved nor sadder than yesterday or tomorrow. “Justice has been done and I respect that, but we should do more. Gender violence must be fought with prevention, by teaching (…) As a human being I feel defeated, as a father nothing has changed,” he added in an appearance before the media in the same court.

The feminicide of Cecchettin, who was about to graduate in Biomedical Engineering and received the degree posthumously, shook the country after the young woman’s body was found near a canal next to Lake Barcos (north) and the autopsy revealed that the young woman received 75 stab wounds in the head and neck.

Surveillance cameras in an industrial area revealed that Her then-partner hit the young woman repeatedly and dragged her along the ground.Turetta later fled until he was arrested in Germany on November 19, 2023.

After the discovery of the body, the Cecchentin family home became an “altar” of stuffed animals, flowers, candles, letters and drawings dedicated after a femicide that even brought the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the leader of the opposition, Elly Schlein, to fight against sexist violence.

Her emotional funeral in the Basilica of Santa Justa in Padua became a tribute to all women victims of violence, with more than 8,000 people arriving from all over Italy who began to shake their keys and bells, as the family had requested. from Giulia: a minute of “noise”, instead of one of silence, as a message of support to so many women who suffer from this scourge.
