Legislative Approval for Establishment of Correctional Service in Ebonyi

In Ebonyi State, a crucial bill concerning the establishment and management of the Correctional Service has been officially passed into law by the State House of Assembly.

This bill focuses on ensuring the effective management of offenders, as well as promoting their reformation, rehabilitation, reintegration, and overall public safety.

The legislative approval of this bill occurred at the Legislative Complex in Abakaliki after thorough discussions and considerations by the assembly members.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa, highlighted that this bill aligns with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs manifesto, emphasizing the government’s commitment to meeting the welfare and essential needs of the citizens.

The Speaker expressed satisfaction with the swift and unanimous approval given to the bill by the House members. He also emphasized the potential for offenders at the correctional center to undergo rehabilitation and ultimately contribute positively to society as responsible individuals.

Earlier discussions by the House Leader, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, revealed that the bill encompasses the management of custodial and non-custodial services within the State.

Furthermore, he stressed that some inmates may have been wrongly accused of crimes, and proper rehabilitation and societal integration could lead to their productive participation in the state’s labor market.

Members in support of the rapid approval of the bill included Hon. Arinze Lucas Chukwu representing Ishielu South, Hon. Onyebuchi Ogbadu representing Ivo, and Hon. Friday Ogbuewu from Ezza South State Constituency. They lauded Governor Francis Nwifuru’s consistent focus on the people’s welfare and interests in his governance.

Additionally, a motion was raised for the urgent repair of a section of the entrance road leading to the residences of the Chief Judge of State and the Speaker. This motion was initiated by Hon. Abiri Godwin Abiri from Izzi West Constituency and seconded by Hon. Oluchukwu Ukie Ezeali representing Afikpo North East.
