Kenya Postpones School Resumption Due to Flooding

Due to the heavy rains causing deadly floods in Kenya, the government has decided to push back the reopening of schools by one week.

Originally, schools were set to resume on Monday after the mid-term break. However, the ongoing monsoon downpours have severely impacted many educational facilities, leading the education ministry to delay the start of classes.

Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu emphasized the need for strict safety measures to be implemented before putting students and staff at risk in schools heavily affected by the floods.

As a result, Machogu announced, “The Ministry of Education has made the decision to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, with classes now set to begin on Monday, May 6, 2024.”

Reports from NewsNow show that Kenya has witnessed 76 fatalities since March, with the region experiencing heavier than usual rainfall due to the El Nino weather pattern.

The flash floods have led to road and neighborhood submersion, displacing over 130,000 individuals from 24,000 households, particularly in Nairobi, as per government data released on Saturday.
