The Israeli Government has once again attacked the Government of Pedro Sánchez this Saturday after they viewed a video of the burning of a seven-meter doll of Benjamin Netanyahu in the Malaga town of El Burgo.
The event took place on April 5, but it was not until now that the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commented on the matter. “This horrific display of anti-Semitic hatred is a direct consequence of the incitement of the Government of Pedro Sánchez,” he indicated in a statement published on social networks along with a video of the burning of the doll. “Even now, the Spanish Government is silent. The Spanish chargé d’affaires has been summoned for a reprimand.”
Sources from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the Europa Press agency, have rejected “any insidious insinuation” and have highlighted the measures adopted by the Government to combat anti-Semitism “without exceptions.” They insist, therefore, that “the Government of Spain is committed to the fight against anti-Semitism and any form of hatred or discrimination, without exceptions (…) We strongly reject any insidious accusation that points to the contrary.”
The burning of Judas
What happened in El Burgo is part of the tradition of the burning of Judas, whereby every Easter Sunday an effigy of someone who represents evil is burned, chosen by the local council. The mayor assures that the municipality has previously used figures of leaders such as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during this event.
On this occasion, Netanyahu’s doll was blown up with gunpowder firecrackers totaling almost 14 kilograms to applause. The City Council has explained the decision as an expression of ‘No to war’ or ‘Stop genocide’ in reference to the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
