Iran declared this Sunday that it considers the armies of the countries of the European Union (EU) terrorists, in retaliation for the community bloc’s decision to declare the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) terrorist after the repression of protests.
“In accordance with article seven of the Reciprocal Measures Law regarding the designation of the Guardian Corps as a terrorist organization, the armies of European countries will be considered terrorist groups,” said the president of the Iranian Parliament, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, during a session in the chamber, according to the Tasnim agency, linked to the Guard.
The president of Parliament, dressed in the Guard uniform, like other deputies, also warned of the consequences of declaring the elite Iranian military corps terrorist.
“The consequences fall on the European Union”
The Tasnim agency reported that Qalibaf has tasked the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Parliament with declaring the military attachés of the European Union countries in Iran as terrorists.
These actions come in response to the decision of the EU Foreign Ministers, who last Thursday reached a political agreement to include the Guard on the bloc’s list of terrorist organizations for the repression of protests in Iran.
According to the official balance sheet, there were 3,117 deaths in these protests, although the opposition NGO HRANA, based in the United States, puts the death toll at 6,713, including 137 children, and also reports more than 11,000 injuries and 49,000 detainees.
Qalibaf’s announcement against European armies is based on the Reciprocal Measures Act, passed in 2019 after the United States included the Guard on its list of terrorist organizations, and allows Iran to take reciprocal measures against any nation that follows that decision.
This Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchí, announced that the Iranian Parliament could declare the European armed forces terrorists and warned that the 27 will regret their decision against the elite military body of the Islamic Republic.
