The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated this Monday that this weekend’s visit to Islamabad was “very good” and that the “specific conditions” under which “negotiations between Iran and the United States can continue” were reviewed. According to the Iranian agency IRNA, the head of Persian diplomacy, who is already in Saint Petersburg, said that Tehran’s conditions for the negotiations “are very important.”
Araqchí, who arrived in Russia after passing through Oman and Pakistan this weekend, also stated that “today’s meeting (with Russian President Vladimir Putin) will be a good opportunity to discuss the evolution of the war and review the current situation.” Russia is, along with China, one of Iran’s main allies.
The head of Iranian diplomacy left Islamabad after holding a long day of meetings with senior Pakistani military and civilian authorities without waiting for the arrival of the United States government envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who had initially announced their trip to the capital of Pakistan for that day.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured that Iranian representatives made a new negotiation offer just ten minutes after he ordered the cancellation of the trip of his special envoys to Islamabad to engage in dialogue with Tehran.
According to the Axios portal, Iran has presented the United States with a new negotiation proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war while postponing negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program until later. The digital media cites a US official and two other anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter.
According to the official, Trump plans to study this Monday with his team the current stalemate in the negotiations and the possible steps to follow.
The offer states that the ceasefire would extend for a long period or that both sides would agree to a definitive end to the war and that nuclear negotiations would begin later, once the strait is opened and the blockade that Washington has implemented on all ships that try to reach or leave Iranian ports is lifted, according to Axios.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump hinted that he wants to continue the naval blockade that is choking Iran’s oil exports, in the hope that this will force Tehran to give in in the coming weeks.
