Investigation Launched into Violent Clash Between NANS Factions in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command announced on Tuesday that they have initiated an investigation into a violent clash involving two factions of the National Association of Nigerian Students in Abuja.

An alarming video circulating on X, previously known as Twitter, captured a brutal confrontation between the two NANS factions, resulting in severe injuries in the FCT.

The conflicting factions, led by Pedro Obi from Delta State University and Comrade Lucky Emonefe from College of Education Warri, Delta State, emerged from a contentious convention held last December.

The election, marked by turmoil, escalated into a violent incident leaving numerous students injured and hospitalized at the National Hospital in Abuja.

In the aftermath, both factions proclaimed themselves as victors and began operating independently.

However, a recent video surfaced, where a bus showcasing Obi’s image was vandalized. Individuals armed with cutlasses were seen assaulting a man believed to be an associate of Obi.

Obi, when reached for comment, accused Emonefe of orchestrating the violent attack and indicated that security agencies were actively involved in investigations.

Emonefe, in an interview, insisted that the individuals in the video were cultists, not NANS members, and accused the Obi faction of being troublemaking cultists.

SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, verified the situation on Tuesday, ensuring no disturbance to the peace enjoyed by the territory’s residents and promising further updates on the matter.

Adeh stated, “The FCT police command is aware of the recent incidents involving clashes between the factional NANS leaders in the Federal Capital Territory. An investigation into the matter has been launched and the command is committed to maintaining peace for the residents. Any developments will be communicated promptly.”
