Investigation into Kaduna State Bombing Concludes, Two Nigerian Army Officers Indicted

Following the completion of its investigation into the bombing incident in Tudun Biri village, Kaduna State, the military has indicted two Nigerian Army officers responsible for the operation.

These officers are set to face a court-martial due to the unauthorized nature of the operation.

During a press briefing at Defence Headquarters on Thursday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, disclosed these developments.

Edward Buba stated, “I would like to touch on the Tudun Biri village incident in Kaduna State, following the closure of the investigation.”

“A thorough investigation was carried out by the military regarding the accidental drone strike, which has led to disciplinary measures against implicated troops.

“Consequently, the personnel involved will face a court-martial for their actions or inactions that contributed to the said incident.”

Buba conveyed that the investigation findings have been forwarded to relevant authorities, while refraining from divulging further specifics.

The Army has taken responsibility and attributed the incident to an error in judgment.

“I am, however, unable to discuss the incident in depth due to ongoing court-martial proceedings.

“Nevertheless, it is imperative to emphasize that the occurrence was a mistake, where the victims were mistakenly identified as hostile forces.

“We aim to avoid similar incidents targeting civilians in future operations. The military will implement enhanced safety measures to safeguard non-combatants,” he elaborated.

In response to queries from journalists, Buba affirmed the culpability of two officers.

The Tudun Biri village bombing in Kaduna State on December 3, 2023, resulted in numerous casualties during a Maulud celebration.

Subsequently, two days later, the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the burial of 85 bodies.

Additionally, Amnesty International’s Nigeria office alleged that 120 individuals lost their lives, based on accounts from field workers and volunteers in the region.

However, General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army, Major VU Okoro, clarified that the military had been conducting a routine anti-terrorism mission but inadvertently affected the local community.
