Alert Ensued as Indonesia Braces for Further Eruptions from Distant Volcano

Indonesian authorities are on heightened alert as they anticipate potential additional eruptions from a remote island volcano. The volcanic activity prompted the evacuation of thousands this week, while residents in the vicinity are now dealing with clearing debris post the rainfall of molten rocks on their villages.

Mount Ruang displayed nearly half a dozen eruptions within a 24-hour period that commenced late Tuesday. These eruptions resulted in a striking display of fiery orange lava, a massive ash column, and volcanic lightning.

Although officials have indicated that Ruang’s activity has somewhat subsided by Friday, the authorities are maintaining the top-level alert within the four-tiered system, signifying a high level of volcanic activity.

Reports from AFP reveal that on Friday morning, hundreds of locals on the neighboring Tagulandang island were observed engaging in the cleanup of volcanic debris from the harbor and their surroundings, with assistance from soldiers and police officers.

Some residents shared their feelings of panic and urgency when the eruption first occurred.

“I evacuated to a nearby house. As the rocks started to fall with the rain, I prayed for mercy, ‘God please help me’,” recounted Ninice Hoata, a 59-year-old teacher.
