Nigerian basketball player secures US scholarship following a fortuitous encounter in Calabar

AttorneyF_, also known as Faithfulness Okom, a lawyer on X.com, shared the story of how he helped a young boy secure a scholarship to the NBA Africa Academy in Senegal after a chance meeting on the streets.

On Thursday, Okom recounted his experience with a tall, slender boy in Calabar, Cross River State in 2021. Despite facing family challenges, the boy was dedicated to basketball.

Describing the encounter, Okom wrote, “In 2021, while driving along Marian Road in Calabar, I spotted a tall, slender boy. Intrigued, I parked my car and approached him. ‘Do you play basketball?’ I asked. His response revealed that he had recently taken up the sport but struggled to find time due to his mother’s absence, his father being a bricklayer whom he assisted with projects, and his additional duties of doing laundry for three families.”

“Lacking a phone, I provided him with directions to my home and said, ‘Come on x day, knock on the gate, and I’ll be there.’”

“He visited my house, where I showed him old videos of #Giannis_An34 during his early years and offered encouragement. I also gave him a suitcase of clothes, which unfortunately his father later destroyed out of jealousy.”

Okom went on to explain how he enrolled the boy in a Calabar academy and eventually welcomed him into his own home due to conflicts with the boy’s father.

He later received an official invitation in PDF form from the NBA Africa Academy in Senegal for tryouts. Initially skeptical, he confirmed its legitimacy and realized it was genuine.

Okom mentioned that the boy required flight tickets to Senegal, and without hesitation, his friend Kennedy Ekezie purchased them.

Furthermore, David sent him photos from Senegal the previous night, revealing that his outstanding performance had earned him a scholarship to an American high school.
