Olaore Aims to Secure Olympic Gold Medal

Adam Olaore, the African Games gold medalist, delved into the world of boxing at the age of 14 in the United Kingdom. Hailing from Lagos, he discusses his experience at the Games in Ghana, his aspirations for the Olympics, representing Nigeria, and more in a recent conversation with PETER AKINBO

How did you first get into boxing? 

It all started eight years ago when a friend spotted a boxing gym and invited me to join him. Intrigued and seeking some excitement, I decided to give it a go. That initial session left a lasting impression on me – the intensity, discipline, and camaraderie amongst the boxers immediately captivated me. From then on, I found myself drawn to the sport more and more each day, eventually developing a deep love for boxing. The challenges, the satisfaction of progress, and the unique sense of fulfillment kept me hooked.

How did your parents react to your choice of pursuing boxing? 

Initially, my parents were hesitant about me taking up boxing due to concerns about my safety. However, once they witnessed my determination and aptitude, they stood behind me. Seeing my unwavering passion for the sport reassured them that I could handle the challenges it posed, ultimately becoming a great source of motivation for me to pursue my boxing dreams.

Was the beginning of your boxing journey smooth or challenging? 

From the onset, boxing presented its difficulties, regardless of skill level. I persevered through these challenges fueled by a desire to improve. Despite the hurdles along the way, the joy of honing my skills and witnessing tangible progress made every struggle worthwhile.

How did you manage balancing sports and education commitments? 

Juggling academics and boxing during my school years posed its own set of challenges. However, at that time, I simply focused on pursuing what brought me joy.

What motivates you as a boxer?

I see myself as a determined competitor, driven by a relentless desire to win. My boxing style reflects my burning ambition to outperform everyone else and reach the pinnacle of success. I strive to be nothing less than the best.

Have you ever contemplated giving up on boxing? 

There were moments, particularly in my younger years, where I entertained thoughts of quitting boxing. However, I always refocused on my priorities and the path I had chosen, which invariably led me back to the sport.

What has been the most fulfilling moment in your career thus far? 

The peak of my career arrived when I clinched victory at the national youth championships in 2020, securing my qualification for the Olympics. This achievement was the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. Standing on that podium, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and pride washing over me – a moment that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

You achieved success by winning a gold medal in Accra at the African Games. How did that accomplishment resonate with you? 

Winning in Accra signified an essential step forward for me, validating my progress and reaffirming my growth in the sport. It marked a pivotal moment in my boxing journey, strengthening my belief in my capabilities and igniting a greater determination to excel on the global stage.

How did it feel to qualify for the Olympic Games? 

Qualifying for the Olympics instilled in me a sense of embarking on a transformative journey towards greatness. The realization that I would represent my nation on the grandest sporting platform filled me with immense pride and gratitude.

How are you preparing for the Games? 

In readiness for the Olympics, I am leaving no stone unturned. Training has intensified, focusing on reaching peak performance at the crucial moment. Collaborating closely with my coaches, we fine-tune my skills and address any shortcomings. Alongside rigorous physical conditioning, proper nutrition, and ample rest, I am cultivating a winning mindset, visualizing success, and harnessing pressure as motivation.

What significance does competing at the Olympics hold for you?

Participating in the Olympics symbolizes the ultimate aspiration for any athlete. It signifies not only the attainment of elite status in boxing but also the pinnacle of athletic achievement. It would be an absolute dream come true. While acknowledging my youth, my goal isn’t merely to participate but to excel, returning adorned with the coveted gold medal.

You were born in Nigeria but raised in the UK, where you commenced your boxing journey. What led you to choose to represent Nigeria?

The decision to represent Nigeria stemmed from my parents’ strong desire for me to do so, despite their initial reservations – a choice I respected and followed.

You’ve competed in various countries as a boxer. Where did you find the most fulfillment in fighting? 

Each country I fought in provided unique and valuable experiences, making it hard to pinpoint a favorite. Every competition brought its own set of challenges and rewards, with my focus primarily on my opponents rather than the locations.

Who serves as your boxing role model? 

While I draw inspiration from numerous boxing legends, my ultimate role model in the sport is the future version of myself. I aspire to become the epitome of my own boxing aspirations in the coming years.

What is your ultimate objective in boxing?

My goal, tailored to my personal ambitions, encompasses the coveted Olympic gold medal, success in the professional realm, and a desire to inspire upcoming generations of boxers worldwide, advocating relentless pursuit of dreams despite any hurdles encountered.

During your upbringing, were you perceived as intimidating due to your boxing prowess in the neighborhood? 

I never projected myself as a fearsome figure, aiming to cultivate kindness and goodwill in my interactions. I kept my boxing activities strictly within the ring, striving to maintain a positive demeanor outside of it.

Who do you consider as the top boxer in Team Nigeria’s camp? 

Team Nigeria boasts numerous talented boxers, evident in our significant medal haul at the African Games. While respecting my teammates’ skills, I stand by my belief in my capabilities, confidently considering myself a strong contender in the camp.
