Governor Idris of Kebbi Calls for Revision in Distribution of Federal Allocations

In a recent statement, the Governor of Kebbi, Nasir Idris, has advocated for a reform in the sharing of the nation’s revenue.

Emphasizing that states deserve a larger portion compared to the federal government, Governor Idris urged for a reevaluation of the distribution formula of federal allocations to align with the democratic aspirations of the people.

During an interview with journalists in Abuja, Governor Idris highlighted the need to scrutinize the current revenue-sharing system, particularly in terms of placing the police force under the jurisdiction of state governments across the country.

Expressing his concerns, Governor Idris pointed out that the existing revenue-sharing arrangement unfairly favored the federal government over the states.

“The current scenario where the federal government claims 55% of the total revenue share is unjust. We must recalibrate the formula to fulfill our promises to the citizens,” Governor Idris remarked.

He further elaborated, stating, “States and local governments are the primary interfaces with the people, directly addressing the challenges faced by citizens. It is at the state level where farmers, artisans, and the most vulnerable segments of society reside, and it is our duty as governors to enhance their quality of life.”

“The federal government, in comparison, has fewer frontline responsibilities in engaging with the populace. Governors and local government leaders bear the brunt of direct citizen interactions, which is a substantial burden,” he added.

Governor Idris emphasized the necessity for a revised revenue-sharing model that allocates a higher percentage to state and local governments, considering their direct involvement in catering to the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian populace.
