A tragic accident has shaken southern Italy on Monday, where four people have died and one remains injured after the fall of a cabin of the Mount Faito cable car, in the Campania region. The first balance of the tragedy confirmed three dead and one missing but, shortly after, it was found lifeless on the slopes of the mountain.
The event occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. (local time), when one of the cables of the Funivia Faito, which connects the town of Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples, with the top of Mount Faito. The sinister cabin, which was in the highest section of the route, remained suspended a while before rushing into the void.
TO Bordo were traveling four passengers and an operator. The authorities have confirmed the death of four of them, while another was rescued with very serious injuries, As reported by the RAI public chain.
In the lower cabin, which was also suspended after the security system was activated, eleven people were rescued without injuries.
Fire teams, Alpine Socorro and two helicopters have been mobilized for rescue work, although tasks are being complicated by adverse weather conditions in the mountainous area.
The president of the Campania region, Vincenzo de Luca, expressed his regret for what happened and confirmed that the installation had been subjected to maintenance tasks just a week before the accident.
The authorities have opened an investigation to clarify the exact causes of cable and incident breakage, while the country faces a hard blow related to cable transport, after the tragic accident of the Stresa cable car in 2021.
