Focus on devolution of power and electoral reform – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, the former senator representing Kaduna central, emphasized the importance of prioritizing devolution of power and electoral reform in the constitutional amendment process.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Sani expressed concern over how political interests have consistently hindered constitutional amendments.

He pointed out that crucial developmental issues often take a back seat during the amendment process due to the influence of political leaders.

Discussing the challenges faced, Sani highlighted the trend since 1999 of setting up committees to amend the Nigerian constitution but noted that these efforts have been hampered by vested interests.

Regarding electoral reform, Sani noted the reluctance of Nigerian presidents to bring about changes that could potentially cost them their positions.

Encouraging political leaders to focus on implementing lasting reforms and visions, Sani emphasized the transient nature of power and the need for leaders to consider their legacies.

He concluded by reminding those in positions of authority to reflect on the inevitable shift of power dynamics and the importance of leaving behind a positive impact.
