Shehu Sani advocates for Prioritizing Power Devolution and Electoral Reform in Constitution Amendment

During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Shehu Sani, the former senator representing Kaduna central, emphasized the importance of prioritizing devolution of power and reforming the electoral system in the constitutional amendment process.

Sani expressed concern over the perpetual influence of political interests that hinder the progress of constitutional amendments.

Highlighting the challenges faced in amending the constitution, Sani noted that political agendas often overshadow developmental matters in the process.

He drew attention to the recurrent issue where committees are set up for constitution amendment, but the recommendations are not effectively implemented due to vested interests.

Reflecting on the reluctance towards electoral reform, Sani pointed out that no Nigerian president is willing to change the electoral system if it risks their hold on power.

He urged current political leaders to focus on implementing reforms and long-term visions that extend beyond their individual tenures, reminding them of the transient nature of power.

“It is vital for those in positions of authority to consider the consequences of their actions and decisions, as power dynamics can swiftly shift,” Sani remarked.
