Munich airport has suspended its flights for approximately one hour after two pilots reported the presence of a drone. The authorities have confirmed that during the suspension of flights, more than 20 flights that were scheduled to land in Munich were diverted to other airports, which has caused delays and cancellations of flights already scheduled.
It was around 9 in the morning that two different aircraft crews informed the airport control tower that they had seen an artifact flying over the facilities. The warning activated the alarms and forced the security forces to deploy a contingent in the area. After no trace of the object was found, the closure was lifted an hour later after ruling out a threat to air traffic.
Drone alert: a repeated event
Last October the German airport also experienced a similar situation as it had to temporarily interrupt its operations. The consequence was that 17 flights did not take off and another 15 were diverted to other airports.
These incidents come at a time of tension in Europe with Russia following the events in a town in Romania in which the impact of a Russian drone against a building left two people injured. This event was condemned by NATO, calling it “recklessness” on the part of Russia.
Although the Munich incident continues to be investigated, today’s deployment demonstrates the European policy of exercising extreme caution in airspace due to the threat of this type of objects.
