FG Urges EFCC’s invitees to Walk the Path of Decency

The obstruction faced by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in carrying out its constitutional duties is concerning, according to Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

Fagbemi emphasized that the EFCC has the authority to summon individuals during its investigations.

This statement comes in light of the recent failed attempt by the EFCC to apprehend the former governor of Kogi State, Yayaha Bello, despite having a court order in hand.

Following a prolonged stakeout at his residence in Abuja, Bello was reportedly whisked away by his successor, Usman Ododo.

In a statement he personally issued on Thursday, Fagbemi refrained from explicitly naming the former governor.

He did, however, urge public officials not to impede the EFCC in the execution of its lawful duties.

Fagbemi’s statement read, “The ongoing unusual events surrounding the EFCC’s efforts to fulfill its statutory obligations have drawn my utmost concern.

“It is undeniable that by law, the EFCC has the mandate to request the presence of any individual relevant to their investigations, irrespective of their status.

“Hence, when summoned, the least expected of us is not to obstruct the EFCC but to dutifully comply with their request. It is disheartening to witness public officials, who themselves are entitled to protection by law enforcement agencies, devise hindrances to impede the commendable efforts of the EFCC to discharge its duties.”

He pledged to hold accountable any law enforcement agency found guilty of violating citizens’ fundamental rights.

Fagbemi affirmed, “Avoiding the law does not resolve issues but exacerbates them.
I unequivocally stand for upholding the rule of law and will promptly intervene should the EFCC or any other agency overstep and infringe on the fundamental rights of Nigerians. However, I staunchly believe that state institutions should be allowed to operate effectively and efficiently.”

Fagbemi encouraged individuals summoned by the EFCC to heed such calls.

He remarked, “Nigeria boasts a robust judicial system capable of safeguarding those who abide by the rule of law in seeking protection.

“I, therefore, implore anyone summoned by the EFCC or any other agency to promptly choose the path of decency and respect by honoring such summons rather than resorting to self-help methods and evasions that only tarnish our nation’s reputation globally.”
