‘Fair hearing before trial’ – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer demands as IPOB leader knows fate May 20

Lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Alloy Ejimakor, has called for “fair hearing safeguards” for his client to be provided before his trial for terrorism commences.

It was announced by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court that May 20, 2024, has been slated to determine Kanu’s bail situation.

Additionally, the same Judge will make a decision on Kanu’s plea to be moved from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, to house arrest.

In a recent motion argued by Ejimakor, Kanu, who has been detained since 2021, sought the restoration of his bail granted in 2017 by Justice Nyako. He asserted that he did not violate any bail terms, explaining that he was forced to leave the country when his residence was reportedly invaded by the military.

Responding to the developments, Ejimakor shared on X: “The proceedings completed today. I refer to it as ‘proceedings’ because it has not yet escalated to a TRIAL.

“As previously mentioned, prior to #MNK facing trial, #FairHearing safeguards have to be established. We have presented our appeals; the responsibility now lies with the Court to make the appropriate decisions. Next scheduled session: May 20.”
