Enhancing Market Confidence: SEC’s Plans for Nigeria’s Q1 CMC Meeting

Plans for the first quarter of 2024 virtual Capital Market Committee meeting in Nigeria have been unveiled by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Set for Thursday, 18 April 2024, the upcoming meeting aims to tackle critical challenges and generate strategic initiatives to propel the Nigerian capital market forward.

Journalists were briefed about this in a statement released by SEC on Monday.

The focus of the meeting will revolve around addressing key market issues and ensuring comprehensive solutions are put in place.

The agenda will include updates on major achievements from various technical committees, such as the Commodities Ecosystem Implementation Committee, E-Dividend and Direct Cash Settlement, Financial Literacy, and the Non-interest Capital Market Financial Literacy Technical Committee.

These committees play a crucial role in executing the Capital Market Master Plan.

Comprising the SEC, capital market operators, trade groups, and other stakeholders, the CMC acts as an industry-wide body. It serves as a key platform for dialogue, fosters idea exchange, tackles significant issues affecting market growth and sustainability, and collaborates on shaping the market’s future.

The primary purpose of the committee’s establishment was to encourage stakeholders to share insights and offer feedback to the SEC, thereby aiding in the continual enhancement of market operations and regulatory frameworks.

SEC remarked, “CEOs from all registered capital market firms, including Broker/Dealers, Investment Advisers, Custodians, Fund/Portfolio Managers, and others will attend the meeting. In addition, CEOs from the Nigerian Exchange Group, National Association of Securities Dealers, FMDQ Group Plc, Africa Exchange Holdings, Nigeria Commodity Exchange, Central Securities Clearing System, and representatives from pertinent financial sector regulatory bodies will participate.”

Attendance to both the CMC meeting and the subsequent press webinar on Friday, 19th April 2024, is mandatory for invitees, stated the SEC. Participants are required to be present by 9:45 am. The webinar for the press aims to further engage with media personnel and disseminate insights from the meeting.

“A Webinar is scheduled to engage with members of the press the next day, Friday, 19th April 2024.

“Invited guests must attend both events. All participants should be seated by 9:45 am,” the statement highlighted.
