Critical Perspectives on Insecurity in Nigeria by Bishop Kukah

Bishop Matthew Kukah of Sokoto Diocese believes that the current insecurity crisis in Nigeria is a direct outcome of past actions taken by the country.

Speaking at the 42nd Actualisation Conference of Rotary International, District 9110 in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday, the cleric emphasized the urgency of prioritizing education to curb the escalating security challenges.

Addressing the gathering, Kukah expressed concern over the deteriorating state of education and emphasized the need for religious bodies, charitable organizations, and humanitarian groups to unite their efforts in eradicating illiteracy.

He pointed out, “The repercussions of inadequate education are evident in the prevailing fears of banditry and terrorism. The seeds sown in the past have brought us to this point, and if left unaddressed, the situation will worsen.”

Kukah lamented the millions of children denied access to education, highlighting the detrimental impacts of illiteracy on society. He stressed the importance of combating this issue urgently to prevent further deterioration.

Highlighting the significance of education, Bishop Kukah urged the educated populace to rethink their sense of security in light of the prevailing challenges.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in a goodwill message, urged the Rotary Club to intensify their efforts in bettering the world and prioritizing the welfare of humanity.

In a pre-recorded video message, Obasanjo called on participants to renew their commitment to societal improvement and aiding the less privileged.

Recognizing the achievements of the Rotary Club under her leadership, District Governor Ifeyinwa Ejezie emphasized the organization’s focus on fundamental education, healthcare, and economic empowerment initiatives.

She highlighted the club’s proactive approach to addressing mental health issues and combating youth substance abuse, reiterating their dedication to local and global humanitarian causes.
