Confirmation of an outbreak of an unknown disease in Zamfara state


The outbreak of an unidentified disease in Zamfara State has been affirmed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aisha M.Z. Anka.

In a statement released by the Ministry’s Spokesman, Ibrahim Bello Boko, and shared with journalists in Gusau, the state capital, the confirmation was made.

Symptoms of the illness include abdominal bloating, fluid retention in the abdomen, swollen liver and spleen, fever, and overall body weakness.

The statement mentioned that the outbreak is mainly concentrated in the Maradun, Shinkafi, and Gusau local government areas of the state.

It was noted that children are the most affected demographic, and the cases are linked to water consumption.

So far, a total of one hundred and seventy-seven cases have been identified, with four reported deaths.

The incident has been communicated to NCDC partners and relevant stakeholders.

Under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, Dr Aisha M.Z. Anka, the Ministry of Health is presently engaged in the emergency response phase to ascertain the illnesses, their origins, and to manage the situation.

Diverse biological samples from humans and animals, soil, water, agricultural produce, and food items have been sent to laboratories in Lagos and Abuja for analysis.

The ministry pledges to keep the public and stakeholders informed promptly on any developments.
