Confirmation by Nigerian government of reduced electricity tariffs for Band A customers

The reduction of electricity tariffs has been officially confirmed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission for eleven Electricity Distribution Companies.

In an exclusive interview with NewsNow on Monday, Dafe Akpeneye, Commissioner of Legal, Licensing and Compliance at NERC, revealed this information.

This announcement follows Ikeja Electric’s recent statement that it has lowered the electricity tariff for band A customers to 206.80 per Kilowatt-hour, down from the previous N225 per Kwh.

The new tariff implementation began on Monday, May 6, 2024

This reduction amounts to a decrease of N18.2 in the tariff.

Akpeneye confirmed the Commission’s approval of this reduction as announced by Ikeja Disco.

He clarified that this reduction is applicable to all Discos nationwide.

He mentioned, “The Commission issued the directive. It will be published on the NERC website later today”.

As of the report’s submission, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Kaduna Electric, and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company have also declared the reduced tariff for band A customers.

Initially in April, NERC had sanctioned an N225 per Kwh electricity tariff for band A customers receiving 20-24 hours of power supply in Nigeria.

Following this, the Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to reverse the tariff hike.
