Concerns Raised by Actor Femi Adebayo Regarding Film Piracy

Expressing worry over the increasing cases of film piracy in the country is Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo.

On Tuesday, Adebayo took to his Instagram page, @femiadebayosalami, to narrate his ordeal and share how he recently emerged victorious in his battle against piracy of one of his movies.

He highlighted that the film industry has not fully capitalized on the profits of filmmaking due to the illicit actions of movie pirates.

Adebayo emphasized, “The Nigerian film industry has grown significantly over the years, but its true benefits have been hindered by audacious pirates who reap where they have not sown.”

“This rampant piracy is a significant deterrent for investors considering funding filmmakers. However, by persisting and utilizing the legal framework safeguarding intellectual property, we can gradually curb their activities,” he added.

The actor shared his personal experience, stating, “I have fallen victim to movie piracy several times and have never let the culprits off the hook. Recently, I concluded a legal battle with a prominent media company that operates a major radio station and engages in YouTube content distribution.”

“During the theatrical screening of ‘Survival of Jelili’ in 2019, my film was performing well. However, they exploited my movie poster and title to promote a different film on their platform, deceiving fans and diverting revenues rightfully due to me,” Adebayo revealed.

Detailing the legal process, he praised his legal team, Bola Adebowale & Co Legal Practitioners, for their expertise and dedication in handling the case effectively.

After a three-year legal battle, justice prevailed in their favor, and they were awarded a sum of twenty-five million Naira.

“This victory is not just mine as a filmmaker and content producer but a triumph for the entire Nollywood industry,” he declared.

Adebayo stressed the importance for filmmakers to be prepared to combat intellectual property theft and piracy at every level.

“Each successful outcome brings us nearer to safeguarding and realizing the true economic worth of our creations,” he concluded.
