Chief Judge of Nasarawa State Grants Freedom to 167 Inmates


167 inmates from the five custodial centers in Nasarawa State have been set free by the Chief Judge, Justice Aisha Bashir-Aliyu.

During an official visit to the facilities located in Lafia, Wamba, Nasarawa, and Keffi local government areas, Bashir-Aliyu granted pardon to the inmates.

Justice Bashir-Aliyu emphasized that the visit was conducted in accordance with the existing laws and as per the directive to decongest custodial centers across the nation by President Bola Tinubu.

She explained that her authority empowered her to periodically review cases of awaiting trial inmates to ensure fairness in the justice system.

The chief judge reiterated that the primary aim of the exercise was to prioritize the well-being of the inmates and rectify any unjust incarcerations.

Emphasizing on the rehabilitation aspect, she stated, “Prisons serve as institutions for reforming individuals rather than just penalizing them.”

Highlighting the progress, she mentioned, “In total, 167 awaiting trial inmates have been released – 49 from Lafia, 33 from Wamba, 16 from Nasarawa, and 69 from the old and modern centers in Keffi.”

She called upon the public to show acceptance and support to the released inmates as they transition back into society.
