Caution from APC leader, Muhammad, amidst state police calls

A warning has been issued by Engr. Kailani Muhammad, a key figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, regarding the ongoing demands by Nigerians for the establishment of state police.

He expressed his belief that advocating for the creation of state police poses a threat to Nigerian democracy.

Holding his ground in Kaduna, the politician raised concerns about the nation not being ready for the implementation of state police, citing various obstacles that could impede its functionality.

During a press briefing in Kaduna, he emphasized the resistance of Nigerian governors towards embracing the fundamental principles of democracy, which revolve around serving the people.

The APC leader also observed that many state governors tend to exhibit authoritarian behavior, neglecting the essence of democracy once they assume office.

Expressing his doubts about granting state governors full control over state police, he warned against the potential negative impact on Nigerian democracy. He highlighted instances where governors already attempt to manipulate police forces in their states for personal gains, especially during elections.

Moreover, he questioned the financial viability of state police under the current circumstances, as many state governments struggle to meet basic obligations such as staff salaries, relying heavily on federal allocations instead of tapping into available state resources to boost revenue.

He further posited that entrusting state governors with the authority over state police could lead to misuse of power, with potential consequences for citizens based on political, ethnic, or other biases.
