Bayelsa Assembly confirms 13 commissioner nominees after screening

Thirteen out of the fourteen commissioner nominees presented by Governor Douye Diri were screened and approved by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Thursday.

The list of nominees sent by Gov Diri included former assembly members and immediate past commissioners, totaling 14 individuals for screening.

The confirmed nominees consist of individuals such as Moses Teibowei (Work and Infrastructure), Biriyai Dambo (Attorney General of Justice), Maxwell Ebibai (Finance), Dr Emelah Gentle (Education), Brodrick Preye (Special Duty East), and Dr Ebieri Jones (Mineral Resources).

One of the nominees, Daniel Igali, the former Commissioner for Youths and Sports, was not present during the screening, while Mrs Koku Ebiuwou Obiyai, a former Assembly member, was excused from the process.

Additional nominees on the list include George Flint, Komuko Akari Kharin, Perepuighe Biewari, Peter Afagha, Mrs Elizabeth Bidei, and former council chairman Michael Magbisa.

The nomination of several past commissioners led to some controversy in the state, with concerns raised about their perceived underperformance in previous roles.

Shortly after his inauguration on February 14, Governor Diri dissolved his cabinet, leading to the reconstitution and confirmation process of the new nominees.

The Speaker oversaw the screening session held at the State House of Assembly complex in Yenagoa, the state capital.
