Arrest of 19-year-old in Kwara for alleged rape of minor

Authorities from the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have apprehended a 19-year-old individual named Jamiu Akande for reportedly committing the crime of rape against a 9-year-old girl in the Pakata area of Ilorin.

According to the spokesperson of NSCDC in the state, Ayoola Michael, the Director of the Child Unit at the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Alhaja Mariam Yusuf, brought the incident to their attention at their office in Ilorin on Tuesday.

Michael elaborated that after receiving a distress call from Babareke House in the Ipata Oloje area of Ilorin, the ministry decided to inform the NSCDC about the case.

Michael stated, “In a prompt manner, the Command responded and successfully apprehended the suspect following diligent efforts made by its officers.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect would frequently visit the victim’s home pretending to visit his friend, which granted him access to the victim.

“On December 1, 2023, he coerced the victim to an unfinished building where the assault took place. Additionally, on April 16, 2024, he sent her to purchase bread and then took her to a run-down structure where he subjected her to further abuse,” Michael explained.

“The victim disclosed that the suspect has been exploiting her sexually since December 2023,” the statement highlighted.

The NSCDC’s spokesperson also mentioned that the suspect has admitted to the crime and will face prosecution in a court of law.
