Apology from Alleged Hausa Traditional Ruler to Benin Monarch

An apology has been issued by Alhaji Danjuma Binkola, the purported Hausa traditional ruler (Garkuwan Hausawan) in Benin, Edo State capital, following concerns raised by the Benin Traditional Council about his planned installation.

In a viral video, Binkola, who was scheduled to be installed on May 5, was seen seeking forgiveness from the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

Speaking in Pidgin English in the video, Binkola admitted his lack of awareness regarding the significance of his supposed installation as the Garkuwan Hausawan Benin.

He mentioned, “I understand the traditions and customs of the state, having been born and raised in Edo State, just like my father, Alhaji Garuba, who hails from Benin.

“I was unaware of the implications of my actions, as the individual set to bestow the title on me only informed me that my responsibility was to support him in overseeing the Hausa Community’s affairs in Edo State and pass on communications to the palace.”

He humbly requested the monarch’s forgiveness, acknowledging the kindness he had received from Edo State.

A statement from the Benin Traditional Council, issued on Thursday, cautioned against the alleged turbaning of any individual as Garkuwan Hausawan Benin in Edo State.

The statement stated, “The BTC wishes to notify the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies, as well as the general public, that this proposed event contradicts Benin Tradition and Customary Law concerning chieftaincy matters and must therefore be terminated immediately.

“Thus, the BTC advises the organizers of the event to respect the sanctity of Benin Traditional and Customary Law by calling off the planned ceremony.”
