The gathering of more than one has analyzed the fragility of the ceasefire agreement reached between the United States and Iran last Wednesday. Despite its supposed entry into force, tension in the region has not subsided: Israel has continued to launch attacks on Lebanon, killing more than 250 people in the last 24 hours, while Iran has responded by once again announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacking energy facilities in Gulf countries.
For journalist Antonio Caño, what is anomalous about this conflict is the involvement of the United States against Iran without a clear strategy, without solid allies and without the support of its own public opinion. “And all that has been turned against him,” he said, referring to Donald Trump, whose foreign policy he considers erratic. In that sense, he has stated that this accumulation of factors may end up taking its toll on the American president.
Caño has also pointed to the internal political scene in the United States, showing his hope in a victory for the Democratic Party in the midterm elections, in which the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate will be renewed. In his opinion, this result could open the door to an impeachment against the US president due to doubts about his mental condition.
In parallel, he has stressed that Israel’s actions in Lebanon must be analyzed independently, as it is a strategy with its own historical roots that transcend the current context of the conflict with Iran.
For his part, Carlos Alsina has raised his doubts about the real path of an eventual impeachment process against Trump and about how his mental capacities could be evaluated. Caño has explained that impeachment is, in essence, a political process, so it does not require the same level of evidence as a judicial procedure. In his opinion, there are already enough elements in the political sphere – decisions, messages on social networks or public statements – that fuel doubts about the president’s stability. “The basis for achieving an impeachment will exist,” he stated.

The key in the midterm elections
However, he has clarified that everything will depend on the November election results. Furthermore, he considers an internal rebellion in the Republican Party unlikely, since voices critical of Trump within the party continue to be a minority. “Trump has not lost control of his party,” he concluded, insisting that the key will be whether or not the Democrats achieve a sufficient majority after the elections.
